Members of the House Judiciary Committee dropped provisions in the bill that would allow consumers to sue companies that fail to take them off lists for bulk e-mailings. But ISPs (Internet Service Providers) would be allowed to sue unrelenting spammers who have caused provable damages. The bill is known as The Unsolicited Commercial Electronic Mail Act of 2001. | Dan Calloway, TheWorldJournal.com Internet Tax ban extension proposed Washington lawmakers last week introduced two Internet tax bills aimed at banning for five years any new taxes on online purchases. The legislation would also impose a permanent ban on new taxes attached to Internet access. The two pieces of legislation, introduced by Rep. Chris Cox (R-Calif.) and Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), also direct states to begin tackling the complexity of their differing sales tax systems, which has been a sticking point in Internet tax debates. The current Internet tax moratorium is due to run out in October, 2001. | Dan Calloway, TheWorldJournal.com Windows 2000 will sell millionth license Microsoft expects to mark the one-year anniversary of the launch of Windows 2000 by selling the millionth license for the server operating system, a company official was quoted as saying last week. Pete Conway, director of large enterprise servers at Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft's Windows business division, said the pace of Windows 2000 sales has "pleasantly surprised" the company since it was released Feb. 17, 2000. "We should easily eclipse the 1 million server licenses mark by the anniversary date. | Dan Calloway, TheWorldJournal.com Covad cuts DSL connections DSL provider Covad Communications last week disconnected broadband Internet services leased to two ISPs for lack of payment, Covad officials confirmed. The connections were severed because DSL networks and Internet Express had fallen behind in payments and could not offer a sustainable solution for this problem. The move left thousands of ISPs' customers without service, but Covad officials said the DSL connection was not switched off to the end-user, so users could easily switch to another Covad partner ISP. Covad said it has terminated business partnership relations with DSL networks and Internet Express. | Dan Calloway, TheWorldJournal.com Telleo creates Internet "cyberhoods" Telleo, a San Jose, California-based startup, is enabling everyone in the United States with phone service to have a free Web site. The bug began spreading Wednesday night and has affected a small number of companies in Italy, Germany, and France. Tagged Cartolina (Italian for postcard), the virus changes the default page of Internet Explorer to that of an Italian music Web site, www.vije.it , and sends copies of itself to everyone in the ictim's address book. The virus was unlikely to spread globally or affect the United States because it is written in Italian. | Dan Calloway, TheWorldJournal.com Lotus reorganization planned Lotus Development is being restructured, with the bulk of the reorganization due to occur this quarter, a company official confirmed on the 5th of January 2001. Details of the reorganization were not immediately provided, and will not be provided until the company's annual user conference, Lotusphere, held the week of January 14th in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., according to Mary Rose Greenough, director of worldwide public relations for the software maker, which is wholly owned by IBM. The company management team decided that because of "evolving market needs: and to "enhance performance" and meet customer demand, Lotus should be restructured, Greenough said.
