Political Snowstorm In North Pole By Isabelle Couture Special for The Journal (TheWorldJournal.com)
North Pole's leader, Santa Claus, has just announced the new election for December 26th.All indications point to another hard fought battle this year between Santa Claus' Red party and its principal opponent, Jim Grinch's Green party. As usual, Claus believes that reinforcing the power of magnetic south pole is the best way to unify the different communities within the North Pole, and thus "Constructing a better future for all [citizens], seals, penguins and polar bears." Mr. Claus' position is however very criticized, especially by the Polar Bear community. Indeed, the bears, being in danger of extinction and considering this reconstruction as a threat to their culture, have decided to found their own party, which they have named the Ice Block. The leader bear of the Ice Block, Monsieur Dussep Paration, known in many political circles for having an extremely white coat of fur, declared that he was not campaigning for a strictly Polar Bear-run society, but only to assure his community a strong defense at the assembly. Claus did not wait long for his reply: "Mr. Paration knows as well as I that he will not be elected on the 26th. The only votes he will receive will be from fellow polar bears." When asked what effect Paration will have on the constitution, Claus said mockingly, "Paration is like little bear cub: he barks a lot but has no bite." The relationship between these two foes is getting more and more hostile. Icy Blockist's say they would prefer dealing with North Pole as a country of their own. They think the Red Government knows nothing about their current reality, being at grips with serious problems of organized crime. Indeed, they strongly believe a special law is required to stop activities such as the illegal traffic of their best powdery snow, which is becoming more and more dangerous to the bear population. On the other hand, Mr. Grinch proposes a program that is very different from the traditional Red position. He believes that many big changes have to be done within the constitution. For instance, he wants to establish a special program called E.C.P.D. "Express Christmas Presents Delivery", which would be sponsored and managed by private investors. Many groups strongly disagree with this idea, believing that such reorganization would only enlarge the gap between rich and poor families. Grinch is still convinced that ceding such responsibilities to private sectors would be the best solution to release the elves from the busy rush of Christmas period. Also, by bringing the gifts faster into households with incomes superior to 60 000$ a year, Grinch is counting on getting more Felix & Norton's cookies than little crispy fluorescent orange and pink wafers that are more likely to be found in less fortunate families. Finally, he also wants to create a law against the use of natural Christmas trees, in order to protect the boreal forest, which is in fact, already very rare in North Pole. Who is then going to become the next ambassador of Christmas? The citizens are very tired of Santa, who is seen as a rather grotesque character in which even kids don't believe anymore. The Icy Block just leaves any inhabitant of North Pole who is not a polar bear very cold. As for Mr. Grinch and his Green party, it seems as though his party line is too extreme, and many electors will hesitate before voting for a leader who, if he indeed wins, will likely decide to oblige every man, woman and child to attend Christmas Mass. Many surveys have revealed that the battle between Red and Green is very tight, but it is only on the 26th, after all the Ballot-boxing day votes have been accumulated, that we will know what will become of the political landscape of North Pole for the year 2001.
