:::from the unknown magazine:::
Perhaps the best-known model to wear her Hispanic heritage proudly, Velásquez is devoted to many causes, including the advancement of Hispanics, fair treatment of indigenous peoples, and the fight against pediatric AIDS. She is from the western Venezuelan city of Maracaibo, and her ancestry-her mother's native heritage derives from the Wayu tribe in the Amazon-plays a major part in her beauty. As a child, she toured South Africa in a touring dance company, then lived in Paris and Mexico. At fifteen Velásquez entered college in Venezuela to study engineering, but her career took a huge turn when a modeling scout caught sight of her picture. She has been featured in the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue and appears regularly in Elle and Vogue.

Velásquez on rights: "As [Latinos], we must be proud. We have the same rights in the U.S. as anybody else. Instead of crying and getting upset about visa problems and having our families come join us, go fight for your rights. Make yourself a productive individual in the society."

:::Jose Escribens, one of the visitors, wrote this:::
I just wanted to make a few comments about the info you have on Patricia's background. I went to school with her in Maracaibo. The school's name was San Vicente de Paul, and she graduated in 1987 (same class as myself).
Her nickname was 'Pachuca,' and no, she wasn't fifteen when she started studying industrial engineering at La Universidad del Zulia (LUZ). She was at least seventeen; probably eighteen. Right after high school (before starting university), she participated in the Miss Venezuela beauty pageant. She placed amongst the finalists, but I don't remember exactly how far down the line she ended-up. She did go to one of the lesser international pageants after that, and I believe she won there. She quit school after about a year and moved to Milan to start modeling.
I haven't really followed her career that closely, but my friends who have contact with her keep me updated. By the way, the wayuu's do not live in the amazon. They habitate the very arid northern tip of Zulia state called 'Peninsula de la Guajira.' That is quite far from the Amazonian jungle.
