400 Gbytes on Your PC
// TheWorldJournal.com

IBM's new technology of magnetic coating will increase the hard disk capacity four times.

Technology uses the lead-in of a ruthenium layer between two magnetic layers, which consist of only three atoms. IBM scientists called this ruthenium layer a "pixie dust,” because it has permitted an increase in hard disk capacity of at least four times. New multi-layer coating, which received the official name ”anti-ferromagnetically-coupled media,” or AFC, will permit the creation of hard disks with a bit density 100 Gigabit-per square inch.

IBM plans to use AFC technology for all their hard disks. Within the next two years AFC will result in increased capacity of the standard hard disk for desktop PCs up to 400 Gbytes, for notebooks up to 200 Gbytes, and Microdrive disk drives up to 6 Gbytes.
