Search Engines to Work With and to Ignore
// TheWorldJournal.com

Obviously the Web is totally different from what it was five years ago. New technologies, that showed up just before the economic recession officially took place in America, did not circumvent online search engine business.

Globally well-known search engines – or search portals – have declined. New search portals, spreading by word-of-mouth, have arisen and are now taking major market cuts. One such search engine is the world-renowned – Google.

Based on the latest findings, Google processes more than 150 million searches a day, or about 1,800 searches a second (in 32 countries.) That is over 2.5 times more searches than Yahoo!, 3 times more than MSN, and over 5 times more than AOL.

The primary reason for Google’s success as a world leader in the Search Engine industry and its ability to excel in extremely fast and accurate resolutions in user queries is in its utilization of a revolutionary and relatively new search technology, as in its commitment to its overall mission. No doubt, technology plays a central role in the search engine business. But behavior is no less crucial. While Yahoo! or Excite (the last went bankrupt only recently) were busy making money and creating never-ending communities, Google was busy perfecting their search engine. The results are obvious.

After Google’s success, hoping for a fair slice of market share, a few search engine clones appeared in the marketplace. But no matter how well intentioned these companies are, dealing with Google’s underlying search system is far too complicated. Building just a visual imitation is not enough. Top-secret Goggle search formulas are still proprietary and remain locked in corporate safes.

However, we may consider AllTheWeb.com one of those successful projects. It is now growing in number of documents it searches (currently over 2.1 billion documents), but search engine’s CEOs should not forget about the precision of searches they offer – otherwise, the future will not be bright.

Precision in search results, as an irreplaceable module in online search business, was noticed by the management of another rival – AltaVista. For those who thought AltaVista was ‘virtually’ dead, think again. Unlike their direct competitor Yahoo!, AltaVista earns its positive results from mistakes others make. Taking into account the field of business, AltaVista is a smart player. “We have recently made dramatic improvements to the relevance and freshness of our results and have launched the industry’s leading tool to access the deep and invisible Web, our AltaVista Shortcuts.” – wrote Krista Thomas, Director of Marketing for Communications at AltaVista Co. to Fortune Magazine (AOL Time Warner parent).

With the search results AltaVista has produced lately we have no doubt they’ve strived to be the best source for web search engine’s in the industry.

With all that being said, here are our top choice traffic-driving search engines with which to submit your web site and with no regrets.

TO ADD:

Google – still the best search engine around. Scans all your web site’s pages on a periodic basis. You would be foolish not to add your site to their index, unless you like watching your site go down in the ratings. It will certainly drive the largest traffic to your site; just watch your web site’s statistics’ summary for real-life proof.

AllTheWeb – over 2.1 billion documents in its database and growing. Don’t be scared of this number, the engine works fast, consistently delivering remarkable results. In contrast with other search engines, your web site’s additional traffic will be great.

AltaVista. According to AltaVista, “the search game is far from over.” According to the results, this search portal definitely deserves a second look. It has proven itself as a search engine that knows how to strike, and strike with an incredible level of precision in delivering query results to its web site members. Worth adding your site to this search engine. AltaVista is one of the three largest reasons people visit you online.

NOT TO ADD:

Yahoo! – Not worth anyone’s time. It has not proven to us to be a very viable and reliable search engine. If you can prove us wrong, we might just reconsider our position. Charging its applicants with an unbelievable no-guarantee fee of $300 for reviewing your web site is an unspeakable crime. Don’t even consider their “free service” option either. It’ll be months, if not years, before Yahoo! catalog editor will browse your site. GeoCities seems to be on the right track anyway due to banner advertisement on the pages of their network. Free service, again, does not guarantee your site will be accepted. But hey, even if you do get in (even for free), Yahoo! keeps saving their reputation as the best search engine because of Google.com’s search technology, which it rents for use for about $7 million a year. So, why bother dealing with self-involved Yahoo!, even worse – why pay big money to get listed in Yahoo! if you can be listed there anyway through Google in the first place?

Excite – What Excite? Come on, after its slow death a few years ago, Excite still hasn’t done anything to improve their overall well being. The world has made its piece with the portal and moved on to new ‘Ex-citing’ things. The search engine, however, stubbornly still does not recognize the new era in the web search world. It proudly lives mainly because of its good domain name traffic, and not because of people looking for quality search results.

In short, our chart of BIG TIME…

Google, AltaVista & AllTheWeb
Losers:
Yahoo!, Excite
