PLOT OF THE SEQUEL

VERY EARLY THOUGHTS

Panic room is a success in U.S at this time. You were offered many big studios projects, such as Mission: Impossible 3. In this kind of position a way to keep your integrity as a filmmaker?

(laughs).. I’m unaware of my reputation (laugh again). Making MI3 would be a challenge for me. I didn’t have enough clout to do the first as I wanted to. I’ve never had a deal with a movie that had to open on a certain date or must get results such as B.O to justify its existence. I have some specific ideas that Cruise and I discussed that I think would make it interesting, kind of shocking.

Shocking?

It’s a particularly extreme take on espionage without having anything to do with terrorism of spying. I know Oliver Stone was supposed to do the first one, he didn’t. It’s possible than this might never happened. If we found a script that makes everybody happy… Not everybody, I mean a script that he likes and I like, we’ll go for it..

If it happens. With a star and a producer like Cruise, who’ll get the final cut?

(Quite whispering) : Me…(A bit louder) Me.

John Woo infused some much needed excitement into Mission Impossible 2. Brian De Palma’s attempt was a failed attempt at capturing the suspense a platform such as the Mission Impossible context could provide. With MI2, Woo transformed Tom Cruise into a walking sex deity who has all the attributes of a larger than life hero. Cruise and his producing partner Paula Wagner have schematically conceptualized the MI films from their very conception. They wanted a trilogy of films with a unique Director for every film. Woo did a great job with the second, churning out a 300$ Million Worldwide hit, now Cruise and company opt for an interesting choice. ‘Fight Club’ and ‘Panic Room’ director David Fincher will direct the last of this action trilogy. Fincher’s only exercise into action has been seen in the dismal ‘Alien3’. I for one will anxiously await this film as Ficher has a pervasive ‘under- the- radar quality’ that catches filmgoers off guard. This of course is just my opinion, I could be wrong. Look for Fincher’s MI3 to be released in 2004.
