Open Screen was created for the purpose for local residence can produce, and direct their-own cinematic masterpiece. On every third Tuesday of the month people bring with them their films to the screening room at the Coolidge Corner Cinema, Brookline. It’s an opportunity for those who can’t bring their featured shorts to an art house or independent theater scene. Open Screen is geared toward having the community be involved with film by bringing in that first short flick. It’s a series of eager film directors getting their shot at a one-night chance to get their special screening. These filmic pieces are never pre-screened they are always shown in the order that they are given (below). The three film selections are just some of the great filmic work that only Open Screen monthly event can deliver.

S.U.V Club:
Directed by: John Allen
The members who so much want to chat about there elegant, fully loaded machines. This band of high-powered professionals, average Joe’s, and uneasy locals come and talk shop. It’s one of the best ten-minute short films to make the silver screen. John Allen directs this club of selfish, and self-centered group in this short film all wheel drive filmic vehicle.

Bill Gets Fired:
By Hooray for Fun! Group
This cinematic short tells the misadventures of one simple-minded employee named Bill. It takes you through the funny, and at times sad reality that his supervisor has to fire him because of his poor work performance. When the supervisor starts in with embarrassing jokes at Joe’s expense it becomes something more devious. Bill Gets Fired is one of the best short films to date truly an Open Screen winner!

Behind The Hypothetical Scenes:
Director, Producer, and Star Afton Grant
One non-filmmaker is relaxing at his home film studio recording his non-existent filmic masterpiece. If he is not recording his next award winner, multi-million dollar box office success then what is he doing exactly? Well, this continues to be the mystery throughout the entire made up scene(s) that he assumes does not really exist. Grant has a true calling for comedy and his timing is exquisite on the big screen. This very original and superiorly done short film venture is a must-see.

Co-Directed by:
Jeff Stern, Filmmaker

Since 1994, Jeff has been directing short narrative and documentary films--his latest work, RestArea screened at the Boston Cinema Census 2002; and his film Orange Path of Divine Motion won "Best Local Short" at the Olympia Film Festival and screened at the Ivy Film Festival in 2002. His sound recording work can be heard on four films in the last year alone. Jeff is also an accomplished musician who has recorded numerous albums with his former band, El Serioso and Paxico, and composed the original soundtrack to the film RestArea. He has directed other films including: Reactions (2001), Toast of the Town (2000), and Rave (1995). Stern is also a successful actor in such movies like the short film The Refrigerator that is one of my personal favorite movies from the Open Screen archive. Also in films including: One Degree, Unemployed, and Big Empty Spaces.

Zak Lee, Filmmaker
Since 1997, Zak has been writing and directing films--he is currently in post-production on his first feature, Shortness of Breath. In addition, Zak has made eight short films, including his most recent, Distance = Rate (Time), which has screened at several festivals. An accomplished Writer/Director, Zak is also a talented Director of Photography. In addition to shooting his own films, he acted as 2nd Director of Photography on the feature film, Billy Todd's War. Currently, Zak serves as a board member for Central Productions, Inc., a film arts and Production Company based in Cambridge, MA. He also heads the committee for Boston Cinema Census, a local film festival. Some of Lee’s earlier directing work including: Big Dig Documentary (2003), Energies (2001), and 27 (2000).
