TheWorldJournal.com Presents…
“The Aftermath: The 77th Annual Academy Awards”

  E-MAIL FRANK OCHIENG

February 27, 2005. The 77th Annual Academy Awards came out with a big bang in anticipation of controversial emcee Chris Rock’s hosting duties. Rock put the audience at ease with his trademark flippant yet toned-down observational monologue. The ceremony started out in traditional fashion with motion picture images reminding the worldwide observers why we were celebrating the film industry’s most significant evening of the year.

The story of the evening had to be the prominence of the films The Aviator and Million Dollar Baby. Remarkably, Million Dollar Baby garnered four Oscar wins out of its seven nominations. The terrific trio of capable Clint Eastwood (his second best director Oscar), revered Morgan Freeman (best supporting actor), and the resilient Hilary Swank (her second best actress Oscar) won for their dynamic boxing drama. And of course Million took home the best picture Oscar as well. The Aviator started out strong by grabbing five Oscars during the ceremony. And as expected, there was a well-deserved win for the exuberant Jamie Foxx in the best actor category for his brilliant turn as the late great Ray Charles in the poignant biopic Ray. Foxx is only the third black leading actor in Academy Award history to win in this category (Sidney Poitier won for Lillies of the Field and Denzel Washington won for Training Day). What’s very impressive about Foxx’s glorious win is that he copped Oscar gold on his first nomination.

Overall, the 77th Annual Academy Awards ran smoothly throughout the night as there were a pleasant mixture of emotions in terms of frontrunners copping the golden statuette (i.e. Foxx, Swank, Cate Blanchett, etc.) while sentimental favorites finally got their due (such as the overlooked Freeman). The festivities saw continued disappointment for the legendary film director Martin Scorsese whom many thought would be his career year to finally grasp Oscar recognition.

Now, let’s take a look at the list of Oscar winners and their fellow competitors to see who and what captured the attention at the Academy Awards. Incidentally, for those who were keeping track at yours truly in reference to my Oscar predictions, I didn’t do so well!! (smile) Of the 24 major categories, I got 8 correct and 16 incorrect! (Yikes!!) So much for my insight, huh?

And now, the winners for the 77th Annual Academy Awards: (Winners will be denoted in bold print with a star next to its name)
