Frankie Feedback (Part 11) Presents: “A Sneak Preview Into Your Rotten Soul” ![]() PREVIOUS PARTS: “Nothing Like the Flow of a Good Old Moviegoer’s Angst” “The Moviegoer Strikes Back!” “Penny for your Pithy Thoughts” "Meet Frank Ochieng, Cinema Cynic" “A Poisoned Pen, An Opinionated Mind” “They’re Out for Blood, Och!” "Frank(ly) Speaking..." "Requiem of a Moviekiller" "Are You Cruisin’ for a Cinematic Bruisin’?" “I Love the Smell of Vitriol in the Morning” Hello once again to TheWorldJournal.com nation of film fans! It has been awhile since we last looked into the mailbag to see what my observant “admirers” had to say about my maligned writing style. And true to form, the majority weren’t too please about the results (hey, what else is new?). Nevertheless, another Frankie Feedback column is present and accounted for so let’s see what the latest flak is that you have reserved for yours truly. And remember…be gentle—battered movie reviewers also have feelings as well! (smile) Frank Feedback (Part 11) “A Sneak Preview Into Your Rotten Soul” proudly presents the following: Comments made to Frank about his review on BIRTH: Roger Galoop writes: “Bad movie, but this member review is much worse. The guy writes like a sixteen-year-old with a thesaurus”. Frank’s response: “Hey Roger, your disdain for my review is rather pedestrian and lazily understated with an obvious intention of serving up a toothless attempt at a verbal browbeating. So feel free to research that sentiment in the same thesaurus you accuse me of exploiting. Incidentally, don’t you have a personality transplant that you’re late for?” Comments made to Frank about his review on MONSTER-IN-LAW: Jessa Sylvain writes: “omg i love this movie it was soooo funny. i ove jennifer lopez a lot. so is so pretty!!” Frank’s response: “I wish that I could share your feelings about the clumsy comedy MONSTER-IN-LAW where J.Lo trades frustrating barbs with J.Fo (Jane Fonda). After being away from the cinema scene for over 15 years, it’s puzzling to me why Fonda would trap herself in such a languishing laugher as this disjointed vehicle. You make the point that Lopez is pretty—we all concur with that tidbit—but saying that this movie is “sooo funny” is rather misleading on your part. Skull and crossbones on a poison bottle made me chuckle more incessantly than anything that was presented in slight and silly-minded MONSTER-IN-LAW. Comments made to Frank about his writing/movie reviewing style: Homosap writes: “I hadn't realised that I was being pedantic when I expected facts 'quoted' in reviews to be accurate. Love your line in the Two Towers review ref a group of tree like creatures called Treebeards. Great reply to my original post, supports a lot of what I said pretty well, why use 10 words when 40 will do, eh? I am sure you must be well respected in your field though you do seem rather sensitive for one who would, I assume, live & die by the pen! I cannot claim to have read a broad body of your work and, quite frankly, probably never will. But from an editing viewpoint, I could trim your reviews by 80% and still end up with something, overlong, overwordy and innacurate. More power to your pen Frank it is good to see that the world of the critic retains the qualities for which it has long been famed”. Guest writes: “I do think Frank needs to cure himself of his habit of alliteration. The stupefying sequences of similar sounds send me screaming”. SCG writes: “My 2p-Personally, I think the content of Frank's reviews is just fine, but I do not like the alliteration. I find it distracting and irritating - I don't tend to read reviews to marvel at the tricks and games of language, particularly not an endlessly repeated trick. But that's just my opinion - if others enjoy it, as I'm sure many do, then that's all well and good. Errors creep into all reviews - it's part of the nature of it. And the original poster is correct in one thing, at least: Thus, they are held up by the weird-looking humanoids Uruk-Hai until the twosome escape therefore ending up in the company of the Treebeards (creatures that look like "walking trees") wondering what to do with their unexpected guests. That's a quote from Frank's review of the Two Towers. I remember getting a good laugh out of it when I first read it! Anyone passingly familiar with Lord of the Rings is probably aware that the treemen are in fact known as "Ents" (even "tree-herders" to Tolkein readers), and that "Treebeard" is the name of the ent that Merry and Pippin first encounter and befried. I would have thought that that was contextually obvious, but it was presumably an innocent mistake - so at the end of the day, it does not matter so very much”. Frank’s response: “So I abuse the art of alliteration from time to time and I may have used some redundant (or non-existent) terminology when it comes to discussing The Lord of the Rings universe. Geez, I guess I really am Public Enemy No. 1 when it comes to film criticism! Quick, call the National Guard—I have been exposed as a flawed human being that makes occasional mistakes!” Comments in question of Homosap’s criticism on Frank’s reviewing methods: Jenx writes: “Homosap it appears you are being one of those so called "Critics" yourself. You are what they call "a Critic of a Critic". I guess you have been bitten by one of those flea bugs. OUCH! I bet that hurt. LOL LOL” Frank’s response: “Yeah, I suppose that it’s easy to be a “critic of a critic” when it comes to hastily analyzing one’s critiquing style. However, one would wonder how Mr. Homosap (or anyone for that matter) would handle the situation giving his/her cinematic assessment of a lavishly grand spectacle such as The Lord of the Rings film series. I wonder if he would be up to the challenge of spinning such an impeccable and polished film review as well? It’s easy to appreciate the beef when you don’t have to slaughter the cow yourself!” Click here to comment on this article. Frank Ochieng © TheWorldJournal.com |
