A Recap: The 62nd Annual Golden Globe Awards by Frank Ochieng ![]() January 16, 2005. Beverly Hills, CA. The masses were treated to the opulent gathering at the 62nd Annual Golden Globe Awards where the Hollywood Foreign Press gets to shine in the sun as they present their cherished prize the to best in movies and television for the calendar year of 2004. The Golden Globes are often considered the real first major awards show of the year ready to forecast the success of film and television’s brightest offerings. As expected, the ceremony took on a celebratory tone as the evening sparkled with both sentimental favorites and a few surprises. In the filmmaking arena, Sideways was recognized handsomely as the movie captured Golden Globes for best motion picture for a musical/comedy and best motion picture screenplay. In the motion picture drama category The Aviator had a great takeoff as it collected golden statuettes for best motion picture, best actor (Leonardo DiCaprio) and best original score (Howard Shore). The boxing saga Million Dollar Baby proved to be a genuine knockout in terms of its wins for best actress in a drama (Hilary Swank) and best director (Clint Eastwood). Jamie Foxx’s electrifying turn as the late great entertainer Ray Charles provided him with an expected (and well-deserved win) for best actor in a motion picture musical or comedy for Ray. Filmmaker Mike Nichols’ Closer snuggled up to a couple of Golden Globes thanks to the winning ways of Clive Owen and Natalie Portman for best supporting actor and actress respectively. From the television front, the made-for-cable HBO TV biopic The Life and Death of Peter Sellers charmed its way to the Golden Globes for wins in the categories of best motion picture for a mini-series or made-for-TV and best actor in a mini-series or TV movie (Geoffrey Rush). The freshman sensation Desperate Housewives caught the gold’s attention for best TV series-musical or comedy and best actress in a series-musical or comedy (Teri Hatcher). The late and legendary screen sexpot Jayne Mansfield’s daughter Mariska Hargitay won a Golden Globe for her crusading cop in the NBC-TV drama Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. And the hammy performer William Shatner, finally being able to dust off some of the nostalgic Star Trek reminiscences, picks up a Golden Globe as a deceptively colorful lawyer on the ABC-TV drama Boston Legal. In switching gears, let’s take a look at the winners and fellow nominees at this year’s 62 Annual Golden Globe Awards. And here’s looking to the next round when the 63rd Annual Golden Globes comes knocking at our doorsteps in January 2006.
