The Art & Crimes of Ron English The Art & Crimes of Ron English Rating: There is really no escaping from major corporate markets that take hold of our daily lives through mass marketing. Thanks to one controversial billboard artist he is changing the face of advertising. Many people can say that he is genius for what he puts on canvas is unlike anything that we have ever seen in our culture today. Welcome to the confrontational, manipulative, struggle that goes way beyond any good ole advertising dollar that we know of from the corporate empire. English makes his way forward in this funny, controversial, high-spirited self-portrait documentary. Can he save us from the wraith of corporate America by bringing truth high above the city streets? Ron English not only being one of the greatest artists in the twentieth century for his unique, truth baring techniques, as onlookers who just seem to wander by as he puts up his latest at times shocking creation of art. He puts everything on the line as he climbs that steel ladder high above us all hoping what his billboards say gives us an all but different message. When you are thinking about fairy tale classics like Robin Hood and his merry men that is how English regards himself as being. He takes the corporate advertising hostage setting place what it should be saying through poking a selection of humor at major corporations revealing “the truth” behind their sinister ways. Bringing that all important message to the masses through billboards and other forms of outdoor marketing. He has redefined what we all call free speech by breaking the rules to enforce a common good to the general public. Ron takes down what we see everyday and replaces that with something that will change people’s minds about American industrial forces. Whether bombarding a national food chain, or massive smoking company like Camel he shuts the doors right in their faces with his catchy one-liners and attention getting artwork. He doesn’t want America to continue to fall down to the forces that drive the point home through other forms of advertising. If he can make a change now and stop this he just might be able to win this war. Its no wonder young folk nowadays have the addictions like drinking, and smoking because the dark corporate world wants them too purchases their harmful products. They attack us with other forms of media through television, radio, newspapers and other forms of advertised publishing. Talented Director Pedro Carvajal gives us a fascinating, worldly lesson that someone out there is doing some good for the rest of us. He has done videos including: Special K and Subvertising focuses on the culture that gets in the way in public spaces, particularly saving billboard advertising for us not the corporate conglomerate. Can Ron and Pedro help us re-evaluate what we see when it comes to mass advertising? Filmmaker Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me, 30 Days) who changed the way we think and feel about the world of fast food products. He gives a brief commentary on Ron’s influential artistic visions and who also knows all too well himself how these major markets pull in any dollar they can. Morgan isn’t the only corporate hound that truly devastates the all powerful and mighty industrial dollar. Since Ron, has been doing this kind of work since 1983 he has managed to develop record covers, and make guest appearances on television programs. The director uses video clips, still photos, and interviews to tell one man’s crusade against the empire. Camel at one point was a force in cigarettes now according to Ron you don’t see those billboards anymore like you use too. (Hmmm…I wonder why?) This is a priceless documentary film that should be on everyone’s A-list its certainly going to make my top ten lists of 2005. When the lights came back on the film got a huge ovation from the cinemagoers. It is a one of a kind film that we can all learn a valuable lesson and hope take something home with us in the end.
