The 61th Annual Golden Globe Awards

January 25, 2004. Beverly Hills, CA. Here we are once again at the Golden Globes ceremonies where the Hollywood brass come together to recognize the best in television and movies. This is the 61st time where the glitzy and glamorous gathering is put forth where TV and film fans get to peak at their cherished celebrities and the overall bash that takes to the world stage. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is the engine that drives the Golden Globes each and every year.

As anticipated, there was a selection of winners that were expected to come up big in the Golden Globe sweepstakes. From the filmmaking aspect, the spectacular fantasy epic The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King nabbed four statuettes including best director (Peter Jackson), best motion picture drama, best original score (Howard Shore) and best original song (“Into the West”). Focus Films favorite gem Lost in Translation garnered three impressive wins in the category of best actor in a motion picture musical or comedy (Bill Murray), best musical or comedy, and best screenplay for a motion picture for that film’s writer-director Sophia Coppola.

In the television angle, HBO’s critically-acclaimed Angels in America made out gloriously courtesy of winning awards for best mini-series or TV motion picture, best actress in a mini-series or TV motion picture (Meryl Streep), best supporting actor in a TV series, mini-series or TV movie (Jeffrey Wright), best actor in a mini-series or TV movie (Al Pacino) and best supporting actress in a TV series, mini-series or TV movie (Mary Louise Parker). Refreshingly, there were new faces that captured the gold that included winner Anthony LaPaglia for the CBS drama Without a Trace and Ricky Gervais for the inspired BBC comedy series The Office. Also, sentimental favorites such as the departing Sarah Jessica Parker (Sex and the City) and Frances Conroy (Six Feet Under) were congratulated for their work.

In any event, let’s take a look at the applauded victors at this year’s 61st Annual Golden Globe Awards. And here’s looking to the next round when the 62nd ceremony comes to cross our paths in January 2005.
