In the film 50 first dates, we view an evolution of a comic genius into something a little more docile than we are used to. Adam Sandler plays as Henry Roth a veterinarian who loves the single life. It does not hurt that he lives on an island and that all of the women he becomes involved with are only there for vacation. He is as happy as can be until he lays eyes on Lucy (Drew Barrymore). There is something about her that is intoxicating to him. Maybe it is the fact that she cannot remember him the next day or the day after that since she suffers from short-term memory loss from a car accident. She is the perfect type of woman for someone who has a hard time committing.

One thing that surprised me about the film is the heart behind it. It could have easily slipped into something cheesy or as I like to say the Dumb and Dumberer train of thought, but there is a growth present in Adam Sandler and his work from earlier films. Who better to bring this newfound growth about than Director Peter Segal, who directed Sandler in films such as Anger Management. He also can lay claim to directing such films as Tommy Boy (one of my personal favorites).

Sandler's performance, although not earth shattering, does show where his career might be going. In my opinion it is heading to the more gentle, family oriented films that have some type of message behind them. Some of the funniest parts of the movie are when he has to start over each day, trying to find a way to make her fall in love with him again.

For Drew Barrymore's part she actually convinced me of her fun-loving innocence in the film, and that was with me knowing about some of her well-publicized background. Her portrayal of Lucy is a refreshment to the film that drew it out of the mediocrity that it could have easily fallen into.

Although the film is palatable, it leaves little to the imagination as to the outcome or what might happen for that matter. It is just your typical comedy that succeeds in what it sets out to do-make you laugh.
