TheWorldJournal.com Presents:
The 2003 Online Film Critics Nominations

  E-MAIL FRANK OCHIENG

December 30, 2003. This is certainly a busy time of year where numerous critics’ circles release their preferences for what the world of impeccable cinema had to offer moviegoers worldwide. The Online Film Critics Society (OFCS) has recently released their selections pertaining to the cherished movie nominations for the outgoing movie season of 2003. The OFCS, founded in 1997, is a professional organization for film journalists whose work primarily appears online. Keep in mind that the OFCS will officially announce its award winners on Monday, January 5, 2004.

Leading the impressive pack in 10 nods is New Line’s opulent and spectacular action-adventure epic “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King”. The film is recognized for best picture, best director (Peter Jackson), best supporting actor (for Sean Astin and Andy Serkis) and best adapted screenplay (Peter Jackson, Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh)…among the well-deserved acknowledgements being touted for this box-office busting gem. The online critics group took the welcomed liberty of recognizing other nominations that either could have gone under the radar (Sofia Coppola’s impeccable direction for the exotic Far East May-December romancer “Lost in Translation) or may have been considered too quirky to count as viable (“Kill Bill: Vol. 1 for best picture, best actress, best director, etc.).

Overall, the online critics determined what tickled their fancy as all the cinematic choices considered were varied from the obvious (Clint Eastwood’s riveting direction for “Mystic River”) to the inspired (Johnny Depp’s wacky turn as a New Age swashbuckler in “Pirates of the Caribbean” or Paul Giamatti as the droopy drawer from “American Splendor”). There were even gifted youngsters added into the mix such as 19-year best actress nominee Scarlett Johannson (“Lost in Translation”) to best breakthrough performer Keisha Castle-Hughes (“Whale Rider”).

The following listed below are the celebrated 2003 nominees up for The Online Film Critic Society Movie Awards:
