Well, another energizing ceremony has come and gone that sent many Hollywood happy campers home with a big smile on their productive faces. Of course the ceremony we’re talking about is the 60th Annual Golden Globe Awards where many of the celebrated actors and actresses from the world of movies and television came together under one roof to be recognized for their special achievement representing the previous year. The force behind the Golden Globe Awards is the Hollywood Foreign Press Association who annually bestow the honors upon the extraordinary performers and their handlers that provide the support and overall direction.

For the most part, the NBC-TV televised 3-hour event seemed to go along flowingly without any major distractions. It is often said that the Golden Globes is the precursor to the Academy Awards. If that’s the case, then there are a handful of elite thespians dying to take advantage of such a sentiment. Frontrunners such as Jack Nicholson (“About Schmidt”), Meryl Streep (“Adaptation”) and the overall dominance of the entertainingly spry Chicago made out like bandits by capturing the coveted Golden Globe. There were a few notable surprise wins as well. It was nice to see resourceful filmmaker Martin Scorsese finally get his due for his labor of love Gangs of New York by winning the best director in a motion picture. And the tandem of Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor winning the award for best screenplay (motion picture) for About Schmidt was indeed an unexpected surprise since the favorite choice in my estimation was the ubiquitous Charlie Kaufman for Adaptation.

Overall, the 60th Annual Golden Globe Awards did provide a valuable service for movie and TV enthusiasts to behold. Because of this year’s big lucky recipients who took home the precious Hollywood Foreign Press Association trophy, hopefully it will be easier to predict the Academy Award nominees and eventual winners. With that in mind, let’s list the winners from this January 2003’s crop of Golden Globe gleeful and triumphant victors, shall we?
