TheWorldJournal.com’s Look at the 55th Annual Emmy Awards ![]() Sunday, September 21, 2003. Once again the American television industry has come out of the woodwork to pat itself on the back in honoring its highly paid entertainers and their handlers at the 55th Annual Emmy Awards ceremony. Hollywood put on its best duds as television’s finest strutted out to compete for Emmy gold recognition. The award presentation, aired on the Fox-TV network, decided to go the unconventional means by rotating a conveyor belt of comedian hosts/hostesses to carry along the glitzy proceedings. There were some sight gags that warranted nervous chuckles such as the put-upon Garry Shandling/Brad Garrett French kiss that spoofed the attention-getting smooch senior songstress Madonna demonstrated on current pop princesses Britney Spears and Christine Aguilera at the recent Grammy awards a few weeks back. Plus, there were emotional moments as well such as acknowledging the late tribute to Emmy-winning actor John Ritter (from ABC-TV’s “Three’s Company” and “8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter” fame). Also, dearly departed legendary funnyman and entertainment icon Bob Hope got the royal treatment in the reminiscence department as America’s “beloved and trusted” retired anchorman Walter Cronkite shed some impressive light on Hope’s infectious lengthy 50-plus year career as the ultimate showstopper. In terms of whom and what took the top Emmys, there was a share of surprises balanced by the “same as usual” kudos for ritual winners. As far the programming was concerned, NBC-TV’s steady White House drama “The West Wing” captured its fourth Emmy for best TV drama while remarkably upsetting the reliable HBO mob family drama “The Sopranos”. And finally CBS-TV’s domestic dandy, the 8-year old “Everybody Loves Raymond”, finally won its honors as best comedy series. The two of the show’s four main stars, repeat Emmy victors Doris Roberts and Brad Garrett, delightfully grabbed their awards for their fine performances on the well-written family sitcom “Raymond”. Of all the program’s cast members, only Peter Boyle has yet to receive Emmy glory for his uproarious portrayal of the Barone’s cranky patriarch. Other surprises included CBS-TV’s “The Amazing Race” copping the Emmy over the still-popular and heavily watched “Survivor” and the pop culture phenomenon of Fox-TV’s “American Idol”. Under the “it figures that they would win” category, “The Sopranos” James Gandolfini and his co-star/TV wife Edie Falco managed to become reacquainted with Emmy one more time while veteran actress Tyne Daly reunited with her gold statuette winning ways for her role as obstinate crusader social worker Maxine Gray on CBS-TV’s “Judging Amy”. This is Daly’s third drama for winning good ole Emmy (she’s won previously for CBS’s “Cagney and Lacey” and the short-lived period piece “Christy”). It was nice to see “Will and Grace’s” Debra Messing win best actress for a comedy for the first time over sentimental favorite Jennifer Anniston (“Friends”) and previous Emmy holders Patricia Heaton (“Everybody Loves Raymond”) and Sarah Jessica Parker (“Sex and the City”). Former Emmy-winner and TV pioneer Bill Cosby (“I Spy”) was presented the second annual Bob Hope Humanitarian Award (Oprah Winfrey’s was this award’s first recipient). Cosby, a devoted educator that routinely championed children’s programming, paid his respects to the late PBS-TV kiddie host Fred Rogers of “Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood”. The aforementioned John Ritter and Bob Hope weren’t the only TV titans remembered at Emmy time; a great effort was put forth to recognize other performers that had previously passed on and left us with their indelible boob tube work that will go on in TV heaven: Buddy Ebsen, Nell Carter, Richard Crenna, etc. Here is complete the list of the 55th Annual Emmy Award winners: OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES DORIS ROBERTS as Marie Barone CBS Everybody Loves Raymond OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES TYNE DALY as Maxine Gray CBS Judging Amy OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES BRAD GARRETT as Robert Barone CBS Everybody Loves Raymond OUTSTANDING DIRECTING FOR A DRAMA SERIES CHRISTOPHER MISIANO, Director NBC The West Wing Twenty Five OUTSTANDING WRITING FOR A DRAMA SERIES ROBIN GREEN, Writer HBO MITCHELL BURGESS, Writer DAVID CHASE, Writer The Sopranos Whitecaps OUTSTANDING WRITING FOR A COMEDY SERIES TUCKER CAWLEY, Writer CBS Everybody Loves Raymond Baggage OUTSTANDING DIRECTING FOR A COMEDY SERIES Robert B.
