Oscar 2002

Another year has gone by where the Oscars somehow manage to captivate the avid filmgoer despite the low entertainment value. But we all know that the Oscars are not meant to entertain, but to honor the achievements of various talents across all spectrums of the industry. The 2002 Oscars were hosted by Whoopi Goldberg who even after winning an Oscar for ‘Ghost’, still can’t seem to resurge herself past the Hollywood Squares gimmick we have so comfortably conditioned ourselves to view her in.

Whoopi opened with a short, yet somewhat funny monologue and despite her ‘Moulin Rouge-esque’ entrance, she did not carry the show. She stepped aside and let the Winners take their place as this year proved to be a regular ceremony. Despite the new Kodak Theatre as the home for the Golden Knight, the show was an exercise in mediocrity and patience.

The highlight of the night will have to be the winnings of African American actors in both Acting Categories. Denzel Washington took home the statuette for BEST ACTOR in ‘Training Day’ and Halle Berry won BEST ACTRESS. Furthermore, Sidney Poitier received an Honorary Oscar for his insurmountable body of work. And just as these talented and worthy actors took home these Oscars, it was clear that the Oscar ceremony was turning over a new leaf.

Yet its’ length was not altered, its’ more than 4 hour running time challenged even the severest of Couch Potatoes. And while the length was the same, Oscar’s style was not. In an attempt to infuse itself with an enriched sense of appreciation for the craft, the addition of the BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM category was created. It is interesting to note that as the industry changes, so does the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences in their honoring of these groundbreaking changes. DreamWorks’ ‘Shrek’ was the first animated feature film ever to win the award beating out ‘Jimmy Neutron’ and ‘Monsters, Inc.’.

As aforementioned, Halle Berry was a surprise as she beat out an honorable list of nominees, as her role in ‘Monster’s Ball’ will finally give her the recognition she deserves. Her tearful and embarrassingly lengthy acceptance speech will prove to be a strong statement in the advent of future African-American actresses to claim recognition and added to the appreciation of the African Artist within the industry. Further recognition went to Arthur Hiller and Robert Redford who both won Honorary Oscars. Other memorable moments proved to be rare but when they were present, they will be indelibly etched within our minds as great moments.

One such moment is the tribute to the city of New York presented by Woody Allen. His quirky mannerisms and fragmented speech patterns presented a series of clips put together by Director Nora Ephron that reminisced on the greatest films of our time filmed in New York City. On a lighter note, the biggest pleasure of the evening came when Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson had to present the Oscar for BEST COSTUME DESIGN. In an atypical fashion, they had a recorded skit, which displayed the two bickering over the choice of costumes. Wilson was dressed as Harry Potter while Stiller was dressed as one of the Warriors from ‘The Lord of the Rings’. Their classic, mindless banter was an audacious skit, which proved to be too few on Oscar night.

Ron Howard’s humble acceptance speech was quite admirable as he stated his gratefulness to receive the Award for Best Director. He beat out ‘Lord of the Ring’ Director Peter Jackson who was considered the favorite. And while there was not one dominant film that ruled the Oscars in 2002, ‘A Beautiful Mind’ managed to rightfully receive BEST DIRECTOR and BEST PICTURE. And while Baz Luhrman’s heart broke while the BEST PICTURE was announced, millions of fans turned off the television and called it a night as one of the lengthiest ceremonies came to a close.
