What Women Want (2000) Paramount Pictures 2 hrs. 2 mins. Starring: Mel Gibson, Helen Hunt, Alan Alda, Marisa Tomei. Directed by: Nancy Meyers. What Women Want Rating: ![]() In an attempt to retain his female fans, Gibson definitely gives them what they want. Unfortunately, who cares? If all romantic star-driven vehicles are this mundane and boring, women can watch them all they want. I will stay home, and so should everybody else. Since Gibson’s previous roles have centered upon all basic testosterone driven premises that have still managed to capture both sexes’ attention, he does a movie simply for the dating crowd. Women will definitely flock to this film, and I suggest to all the men that they run and do not walk AWAY from this terrible film that similarly to Hunt’s “PAY IT FORWARD” expects the audience to simply give in to their emotions and accept all that is happening on screen. Spare me, this film is pretentious, tedious, boring and about the biggest waste of time this year apart from “BATTLEFIELD EARTH”. Allow me to explain. I must admit I was quite excited when I saw the first preview. I thought to myself that Hollywood could finally produce an original and inventive concept. Was I ever wrong. The concept is original, but not at all inventive. The film center’s around Gibson’s ability, through a freak accident, to read the minds of women around him. Once he masters this innate skill, instead of using it to ensue a series of misadventures as most Hollywood films would – he uses this gift to advance his professional career. This is where the film slips into a downward spiral. For about the first 15 minutes of the film it showed some promise. But Myers turns us off by forcing us to care about these boring characters that seem to have no depth. Furthermore, sub-plots that seems easy to see that they wrote them in simply to please the female audience. One such example is Gibson’s teenage daughter who comes to live with him for a while. While these events are presented all before he receives his gift, we forget why we are watching this movie. Gibson is Gibson in the film. While he brings a little ‘excitement’ to the non-existent chemistry he shares with Hunt, he can not seem to save another lack-luster script the Hollywood machines have conjured up and fed to him with a twenty million dollar check. While it will be a huge hit of the box-office, it is not with me. Instead of exploring the limitless possibilities that can arise with a person who has this gift, the story unfolds at a monotonous rate forcing us to view terrible sub-plots that are supposed to make Gibson the ‘womanizer’ turn into a sensitive gentlemen all due to his gift to know what women want. We are exposed to the under-developed sub-plot about his ex-wife (Lauren Holly) and as mentioned earlier their daughter who is tossed into the story only to expose Gibson to another woman in his life with whom he can automatically patch things up due to his extraordinary ability. While women will probably buy into this, they will certainly love him in a 5-minute segment dancing to a Sinatra classic in a Fred Astaire-esque type scene. That single scene proves my whole theory about why a man like Gibson would do a horrible film such as this. I am no mind reader, but I can probably imagine why he did this film. I can easily imagine Gibson’s agent telling him that if he keeps on doing all these testosterone fueled movies, he will lose his women audience, and no actor wants to lose the lovely ladies. Women always prove to be a draw at the movies, because if they go, either they go with a group of friends or bring their hubby. And that means more money at the gate, something the filmmakers only saw while making this horrible film. I was never a Nancy Meyers fan, and seeing this film, it just proves to me that she has a knack for turning great ideas into horrible films. And make major stars seem laughable. Anyone remember I LOVE TROUBLE? While it was not a hit, it made then glory-girl Julia Roberts one step closer to that slump she hit back then. I hope this film does not have the same effect on either Hunt or Gibson. Click here to comment on this review or post your own thoughts. Giancarlo De Lisi © TheWorldJournal.com |
