Urban Legends: Final Cut (2000) Columbia Pictures 1 hr. 39 mins. Starring: Hart Bochner, Joey Laurence Music by: John Ottman Directed by: John Ottman Urban Legends: Final Cut Rating: ![]() If something makes money in Hollywood, or even if turns a slight profit, it warrants a sequel. That is what Hollywood execs. Believe, but they are so wrong. ‘Urban Legends: Final Cut’ is the sequel that no one cares about that has completely nothing to do with the first one. In this horrible piece, the action sets itself on a University Film School Campus whereby students who present their great thesis film, have a shot at the prestigious ‘Hitchcock’ award. Therefore, students all die. And die, and die, the funny thing is, the audience will not care. Remember the guy who did both the editing and the score for that masterpiece called ‘The Usual Suspects’, well he helms this one. He scores the film, edits the film and directs the film, resulting perhaps for the blame to be given all to him. John Ottman is a talented man, but perhaps not in the directing business. But then again, is it really his fault, he was given a bad script, and did his best. His usual style of mixing the score with the editing in order to imply a greater impact to the film is still present in this film. But it does not save the film from its; origin – a bad movie. One good point is that this film does surprise you at some point with its twists and turns of ‘who did it?’ Ottman does a good job at keeping you guessing on your theorized killer choice, yet isn’t that what all directors are supposed to do with a film of this kind? I do not mean to be so harsh, but these types of ‘teenybopper’ thrillers were done, and then they were done some more, and now they are simply old – and bad. The film stars a cast of unknowns, and 80’s star Hart Bochner as the Campus Director, and do not forget Blossom’s Joey Lawrence as another of the film’s cast which really does not make an impact upon me. I must give credit where credit is due, Ottman turned a really bad film into a simply bad film, he made it as fun as possible and at least what makes you stay until the end is the revelation of the killer, and ultimately the stupid motive that created this whole mess – and it is a stupid motive. That said, you can afford to pass this film up, Ottman does a good job, and perhaps will shine elsewhere, but for his first film it lacked a lot of essential elements that make for a conventional ‘slasher’ flick to be spring boarded into a different area. This one remains those videos that will be at the bottom of the shelf and will be notoriously known as a bad flick. Too bad. Click here to comment on this review or post your own thoughts.
