Director Sean Penn first directed Jack Nicholson in the small, yet deeply intriguing film called ‘The Crossing Guard’. That film was in no way a masterpiece but it held its’ ground for its’ duration. Unfortunately, the same cannot be stated for ‘The Pledge’. A film, which I truly admit – I did not ‘get’. I honestly did not see Penn’s underlying message in a terrible waste of two hours of my life.

Furthermore, Nicholson seems sluggish and incompetent as a retired police officer still looking for the truth after a young girl is murdered. Usually Nicholson exudes the greatest performances even from the most underdeveloped characters (note – ‘The Two Jakes’) yet, he seems old and frail just like is character seems which leaves an uncomfortable awkwardness with the viewer.

The script is messed up, the direction is incomprehensible and the motive for this film is terribly absent. One who has seen this film knows quite bluntly that there is no resolution, yet that is not the bad part, what seems to be lacking is the motive behind Nicholson’s descent into insanity.

If this critique seems incomplete and incomprehensible, then you have got the feeling of the film. It is a tepid and wretched allegory of one man’s obsession with a killer that may or may have not been already captured that simply leaves the viewer painfully admitting that even Hollywood’s greatest actors choose bad films.
