E-MAIL GIANCARLO DE LISI Since the film ‘Analyze This’ graced our screens, De Niro has developed from bad guy to good guy. It is easy for the audience to see the good in this man since his mob farce came out. And in this film he continues to portray a comedic antagonist who in this film plays an overprotective father who is just about to meet his future son-in-law. Ben Stiller plays the corky son-in-law who along with his girlfriend, Pam, finally meets her parents. Blythe Danner plays her mom and Bobby D. her dad. As far as comedies go, this is by far is not a laugh a minute riot. Jay Roach, who directed the Austin Powers’ movies, went for mostly physical gags as well as raunchy dialogue that made the Power’s flicks what they are. In this film, he lets the camera capture the tension between De Niro and Stiller as the latter seeks constant approval from De Niro. Even if it means spray-painting a cat. This is definitely a cute little date flick, as it will please both the ladies, with its subtle romance and the men with De Niro acting as the ultimate scary father-in-law. The movie contains some great scenes where as aforementioned the director lets the actors deliver the laughs through finding Stiller in some uncomfortable situations with De Niro that that some men already have found themselves in. De Niro plays his usual self, accompanied with his great grimaces, and Stiller as geeky as ever, comes across as simply a desperate young lad seeking appraisal for his love for Pam. Some fun subplots ensue such as the ex-boyfriend’s riches, broken noses, a septic tank exploding and a C.I.A. operation. As far as the film goes, it is average fare simply brought to life by strong actors interpreting mediocre roles. The direction is also very simple, leaving to wonder where Roach contributed on the Austin Powers’ films and what his specialty really is. The sight gags are almost non-existent and the raunchiness is gone. Instead, we have a simple little story unwinding in 72 hours that manages to hold our attention for the entire length of the film. Granted, perhaps a little more could have been done to the delivery of the film to make it just a bit more entertaining, but if simple is what you want. Simple is what you will get. Sweet sappiness surrounds this film from beginning to end proving once again that love can conquer all. And speaking of sappiness, Randy Newman composes a great score that adds to all the sappiness of the film with a great opening song entitled, ‘Fool In Love’. Whether or not anyone will be totally in love with this movie remains to be seen, but plenty of people will enjoy the little laughs and feel good momentum that this movie brings. And as always, Bobby D. satisfies once again with his influential mannerisms and gesture that leave this writer wondering, why can’t I be like him. Even for his age, he is one cool cat. And he and Stiller save the film from being a bad one to an average film. In the meanwhile, I will be waiting for his next vulgar and violent flick.
