Is it that rare for a comedy to incite even the smallest of laughs? After watching ‘The Ladies Man’, I have found out that anything is possible. Yes, it is true that upon viewing a film such as this, one would not expect a great film; yet, if a filmmaker is making a comedy, shouldn’t it have some comedy within the film? The task of delivering laughs was not established, not even by a long shot; this is how bad ‘The Ladies Man’ really is.

Usually SNL (Saturday Night Live) skits translated into film have produced some fun films such as ‘Wayne’s World’ and even ‘A Night at the Roxbury’. ‘The Ladies Man’ does not contain nearly as much fun as these two other films, yet falls into the purgatory of disastrous SNL sketches badly translated into films, therefore joining the likes of films such as ‘Superstar’. What can I say – was I expecting a masterpiece? NO. I found myself wanting to laugh and instead found myself uncomfortably sitting through another rushed production that manages to stay in my mind as a truly horrible film.

Leon Phelps (titular character) played by Tim Meadows, is a smooth talkin’, lady bangin’ d.j. host of a late night sex talk show. Upon receiving a letter from one of his old flames who promises an end to all his financial problems, he sets out to find this dream woman. Only to discover he is chased by an underground group of men composed by the husbands of the women he has slept with. Despite some fun scenes involving the likes of Eugene Levy, Billy Dee Williams and even veteran SNL actor Will Ferrell, this film simply makes itself out to be a pure embarrassment.

The movie clocks in at a terribly long 84 minutes and is simply a pure disaster from beginning to end. Although Director Reginald Hudson is going for a sweet-hearted, good-natured buttery film, the film can not get past its’ permeated sense of silliness that casts a dark shadow over the whole film not allowing the viewer to take the film seriously even when we are supposed to. What bothers me most is the film even makes funny man Will Ferrell look awful in his portrayal of a closeted homosexual Greco Roman Wrestler.

In conclusion, I guess I had it coming to me. It was my fault for choosing to view such a horrible film, although no one deserves to sit through this film. If one were to expect a raunchy film such as ‘Deuce Bigalow’, my advice is to rent that film itself. All ‘The Ladies Man’ has to offer is Tim Meadows’ lisp talking, lady bangin’ rip off 70’s icon that just stole 84 minutes of my life.
