Sylvester Stallone stars as Jack Carter a 'financial adjuster' who seeks revenge upon his brother's mysterious death. Upon returning home to Seattle, he investigates his brother's death and contemplates his own fulfillment of his life in the process. Somewhere in the rolling out of the film, we see Carter assess his own life and try to make it better by righting the wrong of his brother's assassins. After a five year absence from his brother's life, he returns and in the process of attempting to do justice, he stumbles upon confusing subplots such as pornographic internet fare, old acquaintances, and his niece who he saves from her own misery. Directed by Stephen Kay, this crime drama paces itself lightly with sudden sparks of attention getting scenes.

The minimal scenes of action are done at a fast pace, but the tone of the film revolves around the dramatic sequences. It seems as if the director made Stallone actually display the most minimalist acting skills, therefore making the plot, and in turn the film, revolve around Stallone's performance. The strophophobic sequences are a new concept that works for this film and the rough edit cuts add to the dark yet stylistic tone of the film.

In all, many will expect Stallone to wreak his usual action havoc say " A la Rambo". Yet, be forewarned, perhaps this movie serves an introducer to the new style of Stallone films. He comes across vividly as a gentler, more caring protagonist who sees the injustices in his life. Perhaps I am getting ahead of myself here, but this bad guy has a whole lot of good guy in him. He did act in this film displaying minimal signs of remorse and mercy, in which he does show several times throughout the film to both friends and foes. Maybe this could be a sign of what is to come.

For A Sly flick, usually gunfire is rampant. But not in this one. The pacing is very evolutionary; Kay allows the plot to fully fold out onto the screen letting the audience know exactly what is happening. As for the action, there is no ' action ' like in a regular action film. Instead, what we have here is a weak plot brought out onto the screen with a lot of class that slowly redeems itself as an average film. The stylistic nature of the film is certainly something different, and Stallone is also portrayed through the eyes of the camera, as a cool yet troubled character. All this through lighting, dialogue and great cuts and strophophobic sequences.

Yet, it is not an action movie. He does break a few ribs, and crack a few heads, but unlike other Stallone vehicles, this is a realistic vehicle where Sly surprisingly shows us a new side. As a theatre flick, perhaps on a 'cheap' night. But it is worth it for what this director brings to the screen on a fresh new basis. Despite the weak plot, the film is watchable due to the director's vision. But it is easy to see that it gets mixed up between being a crime thriller with a dash of action, or a plain crime drama. If you are expecting you're Stallone action fix, stay home and rent "Rambo".
