The Emperor’s New Groove (2000) Walt Disney Pictures 1 hr. 16 mins. Animated: With the voices of David Spade, Patrick Warbutton, Earth Kitt and John Goodman The Emperor's New Groove Rating: ![]() Disney is known for authentic and memorable animated films. Theses films usually evoke a sense of hypnotic bewilderment that was contained in such films as ‘Beauty and The Beast’ and ‘A Bugs Life’. The newest entry into the Disney emporium is a film that wants to completely differentiate itself from other Disney classics and as a result seems to set itself apart from the standard expected result from a Disney film. ‘The Emperor’s New Groove’ is a somewhat different film in relation to other Disney animated films. The plot centers itself upon a young emperor voiced by David Spade who is a selfish and pity-less soul until he meets a poor peasant who teaches him about himself and about all the good he can do as the emperor. Yes, this is a Disney film and there are always lessons to be learned in each of their animated films. This adventure happens when the Emperor’s advisor turns him into a llama and is banished from the castle. Emperor Kusko (Spade) is joined by a peasant named Pacho (John Goodman) who will be his guide both on the journey and his life as the Emperor learns about his true self. All this happens as Pacho guides Kusko back to the castle to stop the evil Eesma (Earth Kitt) from destroying the whole empire. The film opens with a lavish musical introduction that conveys the notion that the filmmakers did not want us to forget that this was indeed a Disney film. Then the film ventures off into its’ own territory as a sporadically intelligent and comedic animated film that will leave audiences semi-satisfied with the result. This will satisfy the inner child as most Disney films do but will indeed disappoint in terms of its satiation factor. The viewer will know that there could have been much more done with the film than what was presented. At little over an hour and fifteen minutes, this film seemed hastily crafted and assembled in a manner that is unconventional Disney. While it is different, it is not the regular Disney product we have come to expect. The film is definitely aimed at the smaller ones as it is narrated by the llama/Emperor himself and this sarcastic character guides the viewer through a better part of the adventure. Furthermore, Director Mark Dindal has created characters that closely resemble the actors that voice these characters. Goodman’s character is in fact a husky and strong character. While Eesma the villainous advisor has an uncanny and disturbingly terrifying resemblance to Earth Kitt. And the film’s brightest surprise is her associate; Kronk, who plays her right-hand goon when in reality he is a gentle giant. He is voiced by Patrick Warbutton (Puddy of Seinfeld fame) and provides the film’s ultimate comic relief as the film’s most delightful and developed character. The film is not the greatest Disney animated film, yet it does not possess the quality of a bad direct to video Disney sequel. The film is comedic at times, but is a tad too short and seems too simple to be taken seriously. Usually Disney films have a moral and a lesson to tell, in this film it is the value of friendship and honesty. It is exemplified thought the film as the two main characters develop their relationship and develop with time. Unfortunately, this film does not. This film was probably envisioned as a sub-standard film to begin with and lacks the grandeur of a regular animated Disney film. Perhaps since it was not intended to be a blockbuster it lacks the depth and conventionalism of other Disney films, but it is safe to say that this will please the little ones.
