Kim Basinger seems to have lost her way since winning the Oscar for Best Actress a couple of years back. That in turn solidifies the fact that the majority of recipients who win the Oscar in the best supporting category fall into the curse of going nowhere. Joe Pesci, Marisa Tomei, and Mira Sorvino are all examples of the top of my head of those actors who had a great career lined up in front of them and ended up nowhere. Basinger’s latest flick, ‘Bless The Child’ is another prime example of this curse.

This disastrous super-natural thriller stars Basinger, Jimmy Smits in another cop role, and the talented Rufus Sewell. This movie centers on a six year old girl who seems to be sent from the heavens to redeem mankind. But she cannot even redeem this film from looking like a bad B-flick. The horrible dialogue, terrible acting, and horrible script simply sink this pot-boiler into a deeper grave.

Chuck Russell who directed ‘The Mask’, and ‘Eraser’ seems utterly talent less with this film. The film cannot get itself off the ground from its opening credits and the audience knows it. While it tries hard at delivering some thrills, it paces itself too slowly and cannot keep momentum to involve the audience. Towards the end only through a fun car chase scene does it show promise at at least delivering a good ending, but nope even then does it sink itself.

Basinger plays a psychiatric nurse who looks after a mysterious six year old who is wanted by a cultist Satanist group led by Sewell. Smits plays the cop who helps Basinger with her problems, and that is where his role ends. Also, Christina Ricci goes wasted as an ex-member of the group who supplies Basinger with some info, all the while taking up about 10 minutes of screen time.

Russell seems hard at work delivering a lame script into a fun super-natural thriller that ultimately goes nowhere. This reminded me of how much I miss great super-natural flicks like ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ and the masterpiece ‘Devil’s Advocate’ that are so great at capturing the audience’s attention and scaring you psychologically. This film seems to want to be in your face and ends up being useless.
