Auction winners were transferring to the PlayStation 2 "owners" from $400 to $700 on their bank account or they used Paypal.com payment system, but never received the good. This way family has earned $113,982. If they are found guilty, swindlers could be sentenced for 5 years of prison, informs CNet. | TheWorldJournal.com

Atlantic City public beach is on sale
The citizen of Atlantic City, known under nickname Taipan126 on the eBay online auction, has put on sale sand from a city beach. One person agreed to buy about 0,5 kg of sand for 99 cents. He also had to pay $4 for delivery. Atlantic City authorities have declared, that the deal is illegal because sand does not belong to the seller. Earlier the city had to spend $1,2 millions to purchase sand and to keep a beach from erosion. eBay representatives have announced, that they do not bear the responsibility for the bargains that are taking place on their auction, but promised to keep the city authorities informed about such deals. | TheWorldJournal.com

EBay made its first steps on TV
Trying to involve new users, online-auction eBay has started its first advertising campaign on TV, informs E-Commerce News. Last Wednesday two 30-second advertising clips were shown on American television. Advertising was put in a prime time during the popular TV Show "Who Wants To Be a Millionaire?" eBay advertising will also be shown during the National Football League playoffs translation. David Kathman, the Morningstar.com analytic thinks that it is a pretty good idea for eBay to make advertising on TV. "It is necessary to expand the eBay audience outside the Internet, - Mr. Kathman has declared. - Besides, now, when the majority of Dot Com companies reduces their advertising budgets, there is a chance for eBay to be noticed". Mr. Kathman has also noted, that comparing to other companies-losers, in particular Pets.com which marketing costs achieved 300% higher of its incomes, eBay spends for marketing and development of sales technologies about 35% of the income. | TheWorldJournal.com

40% of Americans are unsatisfied by the online auctions
About 35 millions of Americans participate in any form of online auctions, and 40% of users are not pleased with their functioning, according to the American National Association of Consumers (NLC) and Harris Interactive company. Research has shown also, that auctions are very favorable to sellers and for buyers. However, the last ones should show be careful. Every American online user who has declared his dissatisfaction by auctions work has lost (according to the average) about $326. The first reason of people's dissatisfaction is that the goods acquired by them were delivered with a delay (20%), they received another good instead of the acquired one (11%), they received a damaged good (10%), nothing were received at all (10%). As to sellers, 52% of them are pleased with the auction system. However, 34% of sellers complain about the delays in payments, 27% - on non-payments, 20% - on an auction cancellation, 5% on false checks and 1% on the payments that have been done by stolen credit cards. | TheWorldJournal.com

CDNow does have an ad sales department any more
Bertelsmann AG will reduce 55 workplaces in the CDNow affiliated company and by doing so will completely destroy the web site advertising sales department. The reason is that before Bertelsmann AF was purchased by German media-giant, CDNow was needed additional sources of income, except its basic source - sales of compact discs; and the company started to sell the advertising space on their web site. Bertelsmann which also owns the sound recording label BMG, has quickly realized the opportunities of distribution musical production in traditional, and in a digital format in the Internet. Besides the CDNow purchase for $117 millions in July 2000, the company also cooperates with Napster. | TheWorldJournal.com

Buying its English part, John Lewis company is going to create the largest shop network in the United Kingdom, where its own mark is already well-known. The deal, financial side of which is kept secretly, should be completed by the end of February. | TheWorldJournal.com
