Hyattsville, Md. Still Anxious About Terrorism By Philip Dzikiy, TheWorldJournal.com If another terrorist attack occurred, local governments would have to respond right away. These governments need money for aid. Hyattsville has waited on federal funding to combat terrorism for a while now, and the money doesn't seem to be getting any closer. "I'm dubious that (the money) ever will come," said Hyattsville city council member Stuart Eisenberg. Eisenberg said the city recently spent approximately $17,000 on special suits and gas masks for the city police. Special terrorist response training for the police was one benefactor of the money. All of this money came from the city budget. Eisenberg also pointed out how the amount of time given to preparation is an important factor being overlooked. The city staff and police devote a good deal of time to preparation and discussion on how the budget should combat terrorism. The recent increase of the terror alert level to orange affected Hyattsville significantly. During the heightened state of alert, parts of the municipal building were under lockdown. Thoughts of terrorism are still on the minds of many citizens. The fears are reasonable, according to Hyattsville city council Vice President Scott Wilson. "A whole lot of people have a lot of stress in their lives," Wilson said. "It's a scary time." The city is trying to make residents feel at ease. It created a disaster response board, which helps deal with terrorism, and neighborhood volunteers are ready in case of an emergency. The city is doing all it can to combat terrorism within the budget, but realistically, Hyattsville is unlikely to be the focus of any attack, despite its immediate proximity to Washington. "When Sept. 11 occurred, everyone thought they were a target," Wilson said. "But really, we're not likely to be a direct target." © March 3, 2003 |
