Patriotism Prompts Increasing in Inking
By Jessica Davis, TheWorldJournal.com

Wartime patriotism has prompted many people to get tattoos displaying their American pride, according to Josh Hart of Capitol Tattoo, Inc. in Silver Spring.

Hart, a tattoo artist at the shop, said that even though the demographic of his clientele has not changed, more customers are asking for patriotic designs because of the war in Iraq. The most popular designs are the American flag, eagles, and symbols of the branches of the Armed Forces.

"Just today, I had a guy come in and get a bulldog because he was a retired Marine and felt the timing was right. There has also been a run on flags and the colors red, white, and blue," Hart said.

The most common place that customers get their tattoos is the upper arm, Hart said, however some women tend to prefer a design on the back shoulder blade or ankle.

"The wife of a serviceman came in to get an American flag in the shape of a heart with his initials on her ankle, which was unique," Hart said. "Those are the main patriotic tattoos that I remember doing lately but I've heard stories from the other guys that work here too".

Hart said that he predicts that the current fad of patriotic etchings will die down after the war but there will always be infrequent customers who want a permanent display of pride for their country.
