Move Out Process from Dormitories By Veronica Spears, TheWorldJournal.com For many University of Maryland students, the summer will officially begin after the last final is over and the dorm room has been packed up. However, students who fail to properly checkout of their rooms can expect a $60 bill from the Department of Resident Life. Students should make arrangements to leave within 24 hours after their final exam and residents must be out of the dorms by May 22nd by 10 p.m. Students who wish to stay later can request to stay later and fill out a form to turn into the Resident Director of the building. All rooms should be clear of personal items, trash, cinderblocks, carpet, and any other items that the room did not come equipped with. The rooms must also be cleaned and supplies such as brooms, mops, and buckets will be available to students at the service desk in their dorm. Tope Yusuf, a sophomore government and politics major and Resident Assistant in Denton Hall, said all the RAs have been thoroughly informed on the moving out process. She said all RAs have posted bulletin boards or flyers on the floors letting residents know the checkout procedures. RAs are expected to work at least nine hours at the service desk with a Community Assistant and will inspect rooms for any damage after the last resident in the room is ready to checkout. RAs are also expected to have a presence on the floor to “make sure people aren’t leaving bulk trash on the floor and answer questions.” Yusuf said she has encouraged residents to take home as much of their personal items as possible because “the last couple of days are really hectic.” Nicholas Schaber, a freshman general business management major, said his parents are coming down from New Jersey to take some of his belongings home and then after his last final his brother will pick him up with his remaining belongings. Rachel Kruth, a sophomore criminal justice and criminology major, said she found it was best to take her belongings home in “intervals” so that on her last day here she won’t have that much to take home. Kruth and Schaber said they feel that have been well informed on the checkout process. Schaber attended a short meeting on his floor where his RA explained the checkout process. Kruth said she was familiar with the process because she did it last year and she’s seen the flyers on the wall on her floor, outlining the process. Juan Avila, a sophomore engineering major, said CAs have been informed of the checkout process as well. CAs are responsible for keys and Room Condition Reports, which residents turned in at the beginning of the year. Yusuf said she’s “kinda nervous that people could be here till the last day,” but overall doesn’t anticipate many problems. © April 14, 2003 |
