University of Maryland Health Center Forgets to Pay
Bills, Can't Get Medicine By Meghan Carpenter, TheWorldJournal.com When Jennifer Allain went to the University of Maryland's Health Center Pharmacy to drop off a prescription three weeks ago, she never imagined they would tell her they couldn't get the medication. The Health Center had problems receiving medications for six to eight weeks after failing to pay its bills, said Dr. Margaret Bridwell, Health Center director. "There was a delay in paying some of the bills," Bridwell said, "and a delay in when companies felt confident enough to ship us medications." Allain, who needed a prescription facial cleanser, said the Health Center directed her to several off-campus drug stores, but she chose to wait since she did not need the medicine right away. "It's ridiculous," Allain, a sophomore marketing major said. "It was such a simple prescription; there was no reason for not having it." While at the Health Center, she said they didn't give a reason why they couldn't get the medications, but that signs at the Health Center indicated that they were having problems getting medications. Allain was frustrated when she found out that it was "something so simple and preventable" that caused the problem. The problem did not affect all customers because of differences in the amount of medications in stock and the demand for them, Bridwell said. She said she had no estimate of the number of people affected. © March 29, 2003 |
