26th Annual Boston/New England Emmy Awards By Daniel Berman, TheWorldJournal.com On Sunday, May 4, 2003 I made an appearance at this years Boston Television Emmy Awards. The prestigious gold statuettes were handed to the very best that television had to offer. The general/overall theme of the event was to recognize the best in broadcast news. Some of today's most well known figures in news such as WLVI (Channel 56), Meteorologist Mike Wankum who earned his statuette for outstanding news promotional announcement for "Wankum's Weather Wisdom". At this year Emmys presented such award winners included Todd Gross WHDH (Channel 7) for outstanding achievement in weather reporting. WGBH-TV (Channel 2) came away with a phenomenal 19 local Emmys the awards went to such outstanding programs including eight for its "Greater Boston Arts", also three for the public affairs show "Greater Boston". David Fanning got the prestigious Governors' Award for his highly acclaimed documentary series "Frontline". At the event "Frontline" celebrated 20 years of informing us what is happening locally as well as nationally in news and world events. The station continued to earn the esteemed prize by taking home two more awards for outstanding documentary "Eye on Education: A Day in the Life" and outstanding Achievement in program videography "Firewomen". The Winners Are: WCVB-TV (Channel 5) earned an Emmy in the public-affairs program category for "Chronicle: A Gift of Life". WLVI-TV (Channel 56) tied with WFXT in the category outstanding news promotional announcement for its "Wankum's Weather Wisdom". NESN (New England Sports Network) got awarded three awards in two categories include outstanding sports series "about Japanese Baseball". Also, outstanding sports special for "The Boston Red Sox: 100 Years of Baseball History". WBZ-TV (Channel 4) was presented with six Emmys including outstanding informational program Mish Michael's "Eye on our Atmosphere" and outstanding program elements for "Boston Marathon Coverage". WHDH-TV (Channel 7) had taken home seven awards; two of them included outstanding achievement in anchoring (Francis Rivera) and outstanding achievement in weather reporting (Todd Gross). WFXT (Channel 25) came away with 10 awards in such categories outstanding serious news story "David Wades Massachusetts Gangs" and outstanding achievement in hosting/interviewer (Jodi Applegate). FSNNE earned three awards, this includes: outstanding play-by-play coverage and outstanding achievement in directing live or live to tape "both for its Boston Celtics telecasts".
