Was a Baby Cloned?

"You can't stop progress" is phrase commonly used, and it was proven right through the twentieth century. The power of knowledge create a lot of marking inventions for us all in the last 50 or 60 years: The television, the computer, the Internet, Space Exploration, etc. But at the dawn of the 21st century, a lot of progress were made in genetics. Not long ago, the map of all the genetic code of humans was completed (the Human Genome), and the progress were especially great for farm animals, a lot of them were cloned. Little Dolly, the little sheep, cloned a few years ago. But the problem is, the technology is not mature, and the long term effects of cloning are still unknown, and the part that we are actually aware of is not really reassuring. Many cloned animals developed diseases only found in the case of older animals. But genetic engineering can also alter the composition of animals and plants, by implanting genes of another organism to get characteristics desired by farmers or companies in agriculture.

But, what about human beings? Can somebody claim the right to clone a person or to change the genes of an embryo to make a superior for of humans? This is what seems to be going on right now as a few scientists are planning to make their own cloned baby, the title to be the first ever scientist to clone a baby is highly praised. Those scientists are defying the regulations adopted by the United Nations and a lot of countries banning the cloning of human beings. Already, a scientist in Italy is working on the project and Clonaid said that four other women are pregnant of cloned babies.

The baby Clonaid claims to have cloned is nicknamed Eve, and the location of the birth was not revealed. Clonaid is attached to a sect called the Raelian, which denies the existence of God and are trying everything they can to attract mediatic attention. Although head of Clonaid Brigitte Boisselier claims the baby is very healthy, there a lot of doubts in the scientific community about the safety of cloning a child. Already study shown that the failure rate of human cloning is around 97%, and there is little certainty about the development of the child. Moreover, the safety of this baby and his family could be in danger, if their identities are discovered. Extremist religious groups already fiercely against abortion could try to murder the baby and her family.

Human cloning seems unstoppable, just like progress, and the news of the first baby cloned could be officially made if the genetic test comparing little Eve cloned from her mother is positive. It would be time for the scientific community and the rest of the world to decide what is acceptable and what is not to make sure the future progress of science will be made for the good of humanity and not for the glory of scientists or religious sects.
