Recipe for Life
By Matthew Knott, TheWorldJournal.com

If you have ever had the urge to make you're very own human, you will be glad to know by next year the recipe will be available according to HUGO - The Human Genome Organisation. The mammoth task undertaken to map the human genome is predicted to be over 90% complete by 2003 with almost all 3.2 million bases coding for over 30,000 genes available on the Internet.

Already scientists have mapped genomes of other simple organisms which has proved a much smaller task with a Fly being made from 13,000 genes and the average plant from about 26,000. Apart from being a very long DIY Human Building Guide the genome is expected to provide unprecedented leaps in medical advances allowing researchers to easier target the source of disease.

Speaking at a International meeting on the subject of the Human Genome Professor Yoshiyuki Sakaki claims that within five years scientists will be fairly confident as to the genetic source of complicated diseases such as Diabetes and Cancer and within ten years we would see changes in medical treatments and practices as a result of the HUGO research.

Although the future is promising for Genetic Research and Treatment, the forums also are discussing some of the social, legal and commercial issues caused by the technology. To prevent commercialisation of the Human Genome scientists have already published the Genome freely available on the Internet.
