Faith in America

It has been a week now since the tragic events occurred which ripped a hole in the fabric of all our lives. We watched just one week ago as the symbols of our great land, the financial and business hub of the twin towers of the World Trade Center and the military might and strength of the Pentagon were destroyed or severely damaged. Many brave heroes, the countless fire fighters, policemen, rescue workers, doctors, lawyers, financial leaders, military men and women, mothers and fathers and, most importantly, our children perished in a matter of minutes.

But, we can, as Americans, reunite and rejoice in the knowledge that we will survive this terrible tragedy and become stronger for having gone through it. The love, kindness and caring that I have witnessed over the last 7 days on the part of Americans helping other Americans has touched my heart and soul. When I see on TV the men and women who are at "ground zero" pulling away the rubble and debris hoping to find someone who is alive and yet continuing to do so even after many hours and days of finding no one--but not giving up hope--I feel guilty for not being there with them. When I see my fellow veterans lying in the rubble of the Pentagon...those same veterans who fought for freedom's sake just as I did for 20 years, it sickens me that their lives had to end so tragically and needlessly.

There is one thing that I have seen in these last 7 days of which I am certain. This is that Americans still have faith in their country. Americans still have faith in their God. Americans still have faith in its government to do the right thing. When President Bush addressed the people and said that "we will hunt down and punish those who have attacked this nation..." he meant that we are at war with terrorists and terrorism not simply in conflict with them. If war is inevitable, I'm confident that WE as a nation will lead the world to victory over terrorism. I'm confident that when all is said and done, the American flag will be flying over this great land of ours as it has since this nation was formed.
