First Cloned Baby

Work on the world's first cloned baby will begin next month. It is intended to be given to a couple who want to recreate their 10-month-old son who died in a hospital operation. This controversial process is being undertaken in the U.S. by a secretive commercial organization - Clonaid.

A geneticist, a biochemist and an in-vitro fertilization expert have been commissioned to produce a genetic copy of the dead baby. The anonymous couple is very serious about their ambition and has donated 300,000 pounds to fund the work. 20 egg donors and 50 volunteer surrogate mothers to carry the pregnancy have been recruited by Clonaid. The clone will be created by inserting the nuclei of cells from the dead baby into cell 'envelope' from the egg donors.

The project leader, Brigitte Boisselier, a French - born biochemist, is also the scientific director of Clonaid. She has two doctorates and teaches chemistry at Hamilton College in New York State. She says that the work on this project will begin shortly and the baby should be born by the end of the year.

What remains to be seen is that, will this project become successful with so many organizations protesting against human cloning? We shall keep you informed on this.
