| 400 Gbytes on Your PC By Artashes Toumanov, TheWorldJournal.com IBM's new technology of magnetic coating will increase the hard disc capacity four times. Technology uses the lead-in of a ruthenium layer between two magnetic layers, which consists only three atoms. IBM scientists called this ruthenium layer a "pixie dust", because it has allowed to increase the hard disk capacity four times. New multi-layer coating, which got the official name "antiferromagnetically-coupled media" or AFC, will allow to create hard disks with a bit density 100 Gbit per square inch. IBM plans to use AFC technology for all their hard disks. Within the nearest two years it will allow to increase capacity of the standard disk for desktop PCs up to 400 Gbytes, for notebooks - up to 200 Gbytes, and Microdrive disks - up to 6 Gbytes. © June 1, 2001 |
