Summer 2000 was extremely full of important events, which are now the part of our present-time history. Fraternity of the press did affect them mostly. Due to journalism efforts, people had a chance to learn almost everything about these top news stories. The reviewers of The Journal did conclude seven, the most important news topics of the summer, 2000.

These news themes are:

1. The U.S. presidential campaign

Republican presidential candidate, George W. Bush, and Democratic candidate, Al Gore, have undergone 3 successful debate campaigns and are winding up their across-the-U.S. vote-gathering strategies before the general presidential elections on November 7th. Presently, George W. Bush has a slight lead over his encumbent rival.

2. Middle East peace attempt

The Middle East peace attempts from all factions in that part of the world have been strained to the breaking point as terrorist attacks on the U.S. Navy vessel, Cole, have dampened any lasting relationships and support of the U.S. in that region. Attack and counter attack from the Israeli's and the Arabs has lain to waste attempts to strengthen any peace accords from both parties.

3. Human genome mapping complete

Now that the human genome mapping research project is complete, humans have a total picture of the genetic makeup of the human body and have delved into the deepest secrets of life itself. What this holds for mankind in the future is anybody's guess. But, what is certain is that this mapping will have profound effects on our ability to conquer diseases and conditions that have heretofore been incurable.

4. Russian sub crisis

118 sailors died in sunken Russian submarine "Kursk" in Barents Sea. "Kursk", the biggest and the most powerful submarine sank on August 12, 2000. Caused by a heavy hit with the unknown object, followed by two exceedingly strong blasts and a big fire onboard the sub, it was announced that all sailors died during the first two-three minutes of tragedy. Only now, due to the note found in one of the sailor's pocket (captain-lieutenant Dmitri Kolesnikov), 23 sailors were alive and were waiting for help right after the tragedy.
People in Russia say that Russia as a country itself did sink that day together with "Kursk". August 23, 2000 is officially announced a Day of Mourning in Russia Federation.

5. Concorde crash

The recent crash of the Concorde, which was preceded by the aircraft taking off in flames, killing all passengers onboard, has permanently grounded a fleet that had, up until that time, an almost perfect flight record. This tragedy was determined to have been caused by a piece of debris on the runway, which was struck by one of its tires causing the tire to explode ultimately causing the fire which brought it down.
Concorde still is the safest airplane people have ever built.

6. The Firestone tire recall

Firestone - one of the United States' largest tire manufacturers - recently was forced to recall millions of its tires, predominately on SUV's (Sports Utility Vehicles) and small trucks, due to failures, which were to blame hundreds of lives in reported cases from years earlier. Reluctant to make the recall voluntarily, Firestone was pressured by the government to recall the tires or face legal action.

7. Dot-com doldrums (post-NASDAQ crash, some firms going under)

Online e-commerce businesses - the "dot com" businesses on the web - have suffered tremendously of late due to a severe slump in the internet market predominately alongside the recent NASDAQ crash which forced many online companies to declare bankruptcy in order to avoid legal action from their investors. E-commerce businesses like Amazon.com and eBay, for example, are still thriving amid troubled investors who are looking at their money a little harder while riding the current investment market roller coaster.
